We have already talked about what is Localization and how it may relate to translations. The actual business world requires more translations. Software and websites are translated into several languages allowing the end users to have products in their native language and expand the horizon of their usage. Product owners and services increase their revenues enlarging the markets and acquiring  more users. 

 

 

 

Software and website translations seem similar. They have general aspects though their work processes differ in some points. Let's summarize below few of them: 

 

 1. Content differences

 

Software translations follow more complex process, especially when they are done in several languages. Software has voluminous content and technical vocabulary. Software packages include various manuals: short-guides, end users or administrators manuals, software release versions, maintenance notes and more. Contrary to the websites having concise information and easily accessible content for users, the information and translations of software are more extensive. 

 

 2. Content exporting

 

For content exporting, software and website translations follow the similarity rule than the difference. In both cases, the content of software and web pages are stored in Content Management Systems which is exported into translatable formats, such as XML, XLIFF, CSV allowing the translators to work with the texts. Once translation and review process are over, the content is again back into the appropriate system. 

 

 3. Terms and vocabulary

 

Software and websites have their own terminology. Special attention is paid to the selection of the terms during the translation process. Website translations require more focus on SEO keywords and Search engine. In contrary software translations are focused on the accurate translation of buttons, interface and several functions having an importance for the end users. 

Software content is focused on the user experience, while web content is focuses on search. This means that the terminology of the given content is managed in a completely different way. In websites, the keywords are of great importance hence web pages must generate results. A considerable work is done in advance for the selection of keywords in the content of source and target languages.  In the software content the textual accuracy as well as the easy and predictable usage of end users are of importance. 

 

 4․ Content differences

 

Website content has more heterogeneous content. While main pages are filled with brief general information, secondary and drop-down pages may encompass technical and expanded information. From stylistic viewpoint, software has more homogeneous content. The emphasis is not so much on the technical accuracy of the words or sentences, but better on the user's comfortable and easy usage of applications. 

 

5․ Text position

 

The length and position of the text are the key features in website content. The priority is to display a concise and well-organized texts on the websites. They should strike by their brevity while remaining attractive to readers. It's hard to keep the reader's interest as they spend a minimum time on websites and quickly navigate from one page to another. From that perspective a concise content attracts more the reader's attention than the long and visually heavy content. 

 

6․ Texting issues

 

Software and website translations go through the testing stages. Their content and translations are both stored in caches. In testing process the attention is focused mainly to the font, text length, buttons and various functionalities on pages or programs. Once exported, worked and translated, all the content is imported again back to the appropriate environment.
